Why a Complete RFQ Produces a Better Machine Recommendation
Two plate rolling machines can share a nominal thickness rating and still be very different in roll geometry, drive capacity, controls, tooling and production suitability. A useful quotation begins with the finished part and the real production plan, not only a statement such as “we need a 20 mm rolling machine.”
When an enquiry includes the plate material, working width, target diameter and required output, the supplier can review the application as a system. That helps define the roll arrangement, pre-bending method, machine capacity, control level and optional equipment before the buyer compares quotations.
The 10 Details to Include in a Plate Rolling Machine RFQ
- Material Grade and Tensile Strength
State the material grade and, where available, its tensile-strength range or material certificate data. Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and higher-strength plate do not behave the same under load. The material information affects rolling force, springback and the capacity margin required for the application.
- Plate Thickness Range
Provide the minimum and maximum thicknesses you expect to roll, not only the single most common thickness. Note whether the stated maximum is for normal production or an occasional job. Capacity must be reviewed against the actual material, width and rolling condition.
- Maximum and Minimum Working Width
Give the widest plate to be rolled and the useful minimum workpiece width. The machine working length must cover the real part with appropriate operating allowance. Very narrow workpieces can also need an application review rather than being assumed from the maximum width rating.
- Smallest Finished Diameter or Radius
State the minimum inside diameter, outside diameter or target radius required by your drawings. This is one of the most important selection inputs because the usable minimum diameter depends on material condition, thickness, roll diameter and machine geometry.
- Part Shape and Rolling Requirement
Specify whether the work is a cylinder, cone, arc segment, shell, transition piece or another special profile. Include drawings for cones, offset shapes, variable radii, stiffeners or other geometry that may affect handling and tooling. A standard cylindrical application and a conical application should not be quoted as the same process.
- Pre-Bending Expectation
Tell the supplier how much straight edge is acceptable at both plate ends. If the finished shell requires controlled, low-flat-end pre-bending, that requirement should be stated early. It influences machine configuration, handling sequence and the comparison between three-roll and four-roll solutions.
- Production Volume and Changeover Frequency
Indicate whether the machine is intended for prototypes, repair work, project fabrication, repeat batches or continuous production. Include the expected number of parts per shift or per month when possible. This helps determine whether manual, NC or CNC control is appropriate and whether automated positioning is justified.
- Accuracy and Inspection Requirement
Describe the required diameter tolerance, roundness expectation, seam alignment and surface-protection needs. If the parts are for pressure vessels, tanks, structural sections or cosmetic stainless applications, state the relevant drawing, process or inspection requirement. This lets the quotation focus on the finished component outcome.
- Material Handling and Available Floor Space
Include the plate weight, loading method, available crane capacity and the space around the proposed machine location. Heavy plates may need infeed support, side supports, overhead support, feeding tables or discharge arrangements. These options should be considered as part of the process, not added after the main machine is selected.
- Electrical Standard, Destination and Support Scope
State the destination country, electrical supply, preferred control language and any required documentation. Also clarify whether the project needs tooling, operator training, installation guidance, commissioning support or spare parts. These details make the final quotation easier to compare.

If one item is unknown, include the information that is available rather than estimating a value. A good technical review can identify what still needs to be confirmed before a machine specification is finalized.
Review the Application Before Comparing Quotations
The lowest nominal price is not always the lowest-risk choice. Compare each proposal against the same material, thickness, width, minimum diameter, pre-bending requirement and expected production volume.
